White Under-Stairs Storage with push to open doors

Under Stairs Storage Ideas

Space under staircase in a classic house. An example of under stairs storage ideas.

Does your hallway tend to get cluttered with shoes, coats, and miscellaneous items? Do you dream of opening your front door to a sophisticated and tidy entryway?

One of our favourite ways to transform a hallway is with under stairs storage. Making the most of this otherwise under-utilised space under your stairs provides you with much-needed storage and can look amazing too.

To help you decide what sort of storage you need under your stairs, here are some of our favourite under stairs storage ideas to take inspiration from.

Pull-out shoe drawers

A great way to keep your hallway clear and clutter-free, especially if you have a big family, is installing drawers under the stairs to hold all your shoes. Pull-out shoe racks are a great vertical storage solution to help you make the most of your space while also making it quick and easy to grab the right pair.

If you struggle to get everyone out the door in the morning or are sick of piles of muddy shoes on your carpet, stair storage for your family’s shoes is a must-have.

Toy storage space

If you have young children, you know how easily the hallway can get cluttered with the kids’ toys and games. Stair storage can give these toys a home and make it easier to keep the walkway clutter-free — no more accidentally stepping on a beloved teddy or a surprise Lego brick as soon as you walk through the door!

Plus, one of the most under-appreciated aspects of under-stair storage is that it’s often the perfect height for young children to reach. This means that they’re more likely to be able to put away their own toys in the drawers and cubbies you provide.

Cosy alcove with bench storage

Another popular way to make the most of the space below your stairs is with a seating alcove. Opt for a hollow bench with a comfy cushion on top for additional stair storage. Perfect for sitting and putting on your shoes, a little alcove beneath the staircase can add a touch of cosy charm to your hallway.

Out-of-sight laundry cupboard

A washing machine and or tumble dryer behind sleek cabinet doors is a great way to make the most of your space with a laundry cupboard. Tucked away under the stairs, you can reduce clutter and create a tiny but effective utility room for your laundry washing. Add some shelves or a counter above the machine as additional beneath stair storage for your detergent, fabric softener, pegs, and more.

Built-in bookshelves

Who said the storage under your stairs had to be hidden away? Under stairs bookshelves are a great way to show off your books while making the most of this under-utilised space. Keep it tasteful and minimalist with floating shelving, neatly stacked books, and a few carefully selected ornaments, or go for the cosy maximalist look with books crammed into every nook. No matter how you choose to arrange the books on your shelving, this is a great way to maximise your space for storage.

Pull-out pantry

If your staircase is close to your kitchen, using the space beneath for pantry storage can be a great space-efficient choice. Pull-out drawers allow you to access and stock the pantry more easily, while more traditional shelving behind a neat cupboard door can also be a great way to make the most of the space beneath the stairs. Just make sure to install small lights if the storage space is too dingy to find what you’re looking for!

Wine rack

We’re not all lucky enough to have a wine cellar built into our homes, but if you’re a fan of the vino, why not use your space under the stairs for attractive and useful wine racks? Bespoke wooden wine racks can fit perfectly under your stairs and bring an air of elegance and sophistication to your home. Plus, a glass door can protect your bottles under the staircase and keep them away from prying hands while still showing them off.
