What the customer asked for

Made-to-measure loft cabinetry following the roof pitch on one side of the bedroom - vertical doors at low level under the eaves, angled doors following the slope above. A desk run along the opposite wall under the slope.

the challenge

What the room required

Loft ceilings make standard wardrobes impossible. The eaves space - below about 1.2m of vertical clearance - is usable but only if the cabinetry is drawn to the actual roof pitch from a measured site survey. Standard cabinetry cannot accommodate the angle.

The Solution

ZONE 1

Vertical eaves cabinets

The lower 700mm of vertical height — full vertical doors — holds drawers and shoe storage. The eaves cabinetry at this level is the most useful storage in a loft conversion.

ZONE 2

Angled upper section

Above 700mm the cabinetry follows the roof pitch. Angled doors hold shelved storage behind. The angled section is used for items accessed less frequently: off-season clothing, books, boxed items.

ZONE 3

Desk run

Along the opposite wall, a built-in desk runs under the eaves with drawer storage at one end and open shelving above. The desk top is solid oak.

THE FINISH

Materials & Detailing

Soft white painted cabinetry, oak interior, oak desk top. Brushed-brass knobs on doors and drawers.

THE RESULT

How it lives

The loft bedroom has gone from awkward storage to a properly planned room with hanging, drawers, shelving and a desk - all following the architecture of the loft rather than fighting it. The vertical eaves cabinets handle daily-use storage; the angled upper section holds off-season items.
