Fitted Wardrobes for a Hampstead Family Home

This Hampstead project covered two rooms in a period family home: the principal bedroom on the first floor and the children's bedroom in the converted loft. Both rooms had the challenges typical of older Hampstead houses - sloped ceilings, walls noticeably out of true, and original skirtings and architraves that any new cabinetry needed to respect.

The Brief

What the customer asked for

The owners wanted fitted wardrobes in both rooms, finished in a coordinated soft white painted style. The principal bedroom needed a full hanging and drawer wardrobe; the loft bedroom needed eaves storage following the slope of the roof, with a desk run along one wall.

the challenge

What the room required

Period walls in Hampstead family homes are routinely out of square by 15 to 25mm across a single wardrobe run. The first challenge was scribing the cabinetry so it sat cleanly against the walls without visible filler strips. The second challenge was the loft room - angled ceilings make standard fitted wardrobes impossible and require cabinetry that follows the roof pitch precisely.

The Solution

ZONE 1

Principal bedroom - scribed to period walls

The principal bedroom wardrobes run the full length of the long wall, scribed individually to both end returns. The skirting was carefully rebuilt around the cabinetry so the original profile reads continuously around the room. The doors are hand-painted shaker with brushed-brass knobs.

ZONE 2

Loft bedroom - eaves storage

The loft cabinetry follows the roof pitch precisely. The lower 600mm: full vertical height - is doors and drawers; above that the angled section is shelved storage behind sloping doors that follow the roof line. A built-in desk runs along the opposite wall under the eaves.

ZONE 3

Coordinated finish

Both rooms share the same soft white painted finish, brushed-brass ironmongery and warm oak interior. The two rooms read as part of one coordinated bedroom scheme even though they are on different floors.

THE FINISH

Materials & Detailing

Soft white painted cabinetry in both rooms, with warm oak interiors visible when the doors open. The loft cabinetry, despite following an angled ceiling, reads as architecturally considered rather than improvised - the result of drawing the cabinetry to the actual roof pitch from a measured site survey.

THE RESULT

How it lives

The principal bedroom holds a full adult wardrobe with the original skirting still reading continuously around the room. The loft bedroom has gone from awkward eaves storage to a properly planned child's room with hanging, drawers, shelving and a desk — all following the architecture of the loft rather than fighting it.

Why This Works in Hampstead

Hampstead's family homes - particularly the Victorian and Edwardian houses around Hampstead Heath, Belsize Park and South End Green - typically have period bedrooms with the kind of out-of-true walls and original detailing that off-the-shelf wardrobe systems cannot handle. Loft conversions in these properties add another layer of challenge: angled ceilings and low eaves require cabinetry drawn to the actual roof pitch, not bought in standard sizes.
