Fitted Alcove Wardrobes for a Clapham Victorian Terrace

This Clapham Victorian terrace principal bedroom had the standard period configuration with one specific complication: a low picture rail that ran around the room at door-head height. The owners wanted alcove wardrobes that respected the picture-rail line rather than blocking or removing it.

The Brief

What the customer asked for

Shaker alcove wardrobes either side of the chimney breast, terminating cleanly at the picture-rail line - about 2.05m above floor level. The brief was to preserve the picture rail as a continuous detail around the room.

the challenge

What the room required

Stopping fitted wardrobes at a picture rail rather than running them to the ceiling sacrifices some storage, but preserving the period detail was worth more to the owners than the extra cabinetry. The challenge was detailing the cabinetry top so it terminated cleanly against the picture rail without looking truncated.

The Solution

ZONE 1

Picture-rail termination

The wardrobes terminate at the picture-rail line with a 6mm shadow-gap detail and a thin scribed filler against the rail itself. The picture rail reads continuously around the room above the cabinetry.

ZONE 2

Internal storage at reduced height

At 2.05m total height, the internal layout uses doubled short-hang rather than long-hang. Drawer banks at the base of one alcove; shoe storage at the base of the other.

ZONE 3

Shaker doors

Five-piece frame-and-panel shaker doors in soft white painted finish with brushed-brass knobs. Door proportions matched to the room's existing painted joinery.

THE FINISH

Materials & Detailing

Soft white painted shaker, brushed-brass knobs. The picture rail reads continuously above the cabinetry; the wardrobes sit comfortably within the period architecture.

THE RESULT

How it lives

The wardrobes hold a workable adult wardrobe (using doubled short-hang) and the picture rail still reads continuously around the room. The owners have the storage they needed without sacrificing the period detail.

Why This Works in Clapham

Clapham's Victorian terraces - particularly those around Clapham Old Town, Abbeville Road and the streets running off Clapham Common - typically have period bedrooms with picture rails worth preserving. Fitted wardrobes designed to respect the picture-rail line are a more considered choice than running cabinetry to the ceiling and blocking the detail.
