Alcove Fitted Wardrobes for a Chelsea Terrace

The principal bedroom in this Chelsea terrace had the classic Victorian configuration: a central chimney breast with shallow alcoves either side, and not enough usable hanging space. The bed sat against the chimney-breast wall and the alcoves were filled with mismatched freestanding pieces. The owners wanted a single coordinated scheme - alcove wardrobes either side of the chimney breast and a bridging storage cupboard above the bed.

The Brief

What the customer asked for

The brief was for full-height alcove wardrobes that would absorb a complete adult wardrobe across both alcoves, plus a low bridging cupboard above the bed for off-season storage. The door style was to match the room's existing painted joinery; the finish was to be a soft chalk white slightly warmer than the wall colour.

What the room required

Alcove depths in Chelsea terraces vary considerably and are rarely the same on both sides of the chimney breast. The challenge was designing matched cabinetry that visually centred on the chimney breast while accommodating different alcove depths internally, and detailing the bridging cupboard so it read as architectural rather than as a shelf with a door.

The Solution

ZONE 1

Alcove pair

Both alcoves are filled with full-height shaker-style wardrobes, scribed to the depth of each alcove individually. Internally the layouts differ - one alcove takes long-hang, the other takes short-hang doubled with drawer banks below - but the elevations match precisely.

ZONE 2

Bridging cupboard

A low cabinet runs between the alcove tops, above the bed. It uses the same shaker door style as the alcoves but with shallower bays for off-season storage. The cabinet sits flush with the alcove fronts, giving the chimney-breast wall a single continuous joinery line at high level.

ZONE 3

Painted finish

All three pieces are painted in a soft chalk white half a shade warmer than the wall, with brushed-brass knobs on the doors. The painted finish was applied in three coats on site after installation for a continuous result.

THE FINISH

Materials & Detailing

The finished bedroom reads as a single coordinated scheme rather than as three separate pieces. The chalk-white painted finish sits warmly against the existing walls; the brushed-brass knobs pick up the room's existing ironmongery.

THE RESULT

How it lives

The wardrobes hold substantially more than the previous freestanding pieces, and the room reads larger because the storage no longer projects into the floor area. The bridging cupboard absorbs the off-season storage that had previously sat in suitcases under the bed.
