The Brief

What the customer asked for

Hinged painted fitted wardrobes along the long internal wall, with alcove returns to the chimney-breast wall. Door style hand-painted shaker, finish soft white, interior oak. The wardrobes were to terminate cleanly below the original cornice.

the challenge

What the room required

Greenwich period walls and ceilings are rarely true. The challenge was scribing the cabinetry cleanly to walls that were out of square by 15-20mm and terminating below the cornice with a shadow gap so the original moulding read continuously.

The Solution

ZONE 1

Scribed to period walls

The wardrobes were scribed individually to the long-wall returns at each end. No visible filler strips, no plastic packers. The skirting was rebuilt around the cabinetry so the original profile reads continuously around the room.

ZONE 2

Cornice respect

The cabinetry terminates 50mm below the original cornice with a shadow-gap detail. The cornice reads continuously around the room above the wardrobes.

ZONE 3

Alcove returns

Smaller cabinets return to the chimney-breast wall as a pair of alcove units. Same door style as the principal run; matched elevations with carcasses scribed to each alcove's actual depth.

THE FINISH

Materials & Detailing

Soft white painted, oak interior, brushed-brass knobs. The shaker proportion matches the room's existing painted joinery.

THE RESULT

How it lives

The bedroom holds a complete adult wardrobe across the principal run and off-season storage in the alcove returns. The period detailing reads continuously around the room; the new cabinetry sits within the architecture rather than imposing on it.
