Bespoke Media Wall for a Characterful Hampstead Living Room
In a Hampstead home, new furniture has to do more than fit the available space. It also has to feel as though it belongs there.
This living room had all the qualities that make period properties so appealing: generous ceiling height, decorative cornicing, deep skirting boards and a traditional fireplace at the centre of the room. What it lacked was a practical way to accommodate modern family life.
The television stood apart from the rest of the interior, cables were difficult to hide, and a collection of separate cabinets and shelves made the room feel busier than it needed to be. The homeowners wanted a more settled, considered space - one that could hold technology, books, toys and everyday belongings without losing the elegance of the original architecture.
The answer was a fully bespoke media wall designed around the room, rather than imposed upon it.

The Brief
What the customer asked for
The clients were looking for a fitted living-room arrangement that felt calm, timeless and quietly luxurious.
It needed to include a central television, concealed storage for media equipment, open shelving for books and decorative pieces, and practical cupboards for the less photogenic parts of family life. Cables, consoles and streaming devices had to disappear from view, while remaining easy to reach when required.
Just as importantly, the joinery needed to sit comfortably alongside the fireplace and existing period details. Nothing should feel overly modern, bulky or disconnected from the character of the house.

the challenge
What the room required
Like many older properties in Hampstead, the room had walls that were not perfectly straight. The alcoves on either side of the chimney breast also differed slightly in width and depth.
A standard modular system would have highlighted these irregularities and left awkward gaps around the edges. The television and associated equipment also required suitable ventilation, discreet cable routes and easy access to electrical sockets.
The main design challenge was therefore to integrate modern technology while ensuring that the finished furniture appeared balanced, architectural and sympathetic to the room.
The Solution
Storage That Does Not Dominate
Low painted cabinets were fitted across both alcoves, creating generous hidden storage without overwhelming the room.
Inside, there is space for media devices, games, toys and everyday items that previously had nowhere permanent to live. The doors feature restrained detailing and small metal handles, giving the cabinetry a classic appearance without making it feel formal.
A warm, soft-neutral paint finish was chosen to complement the surrounding walls and architectural features. Rather than standing out as a separate piece of furniture, the cabinets now feel like a natural part of the room.

How it lives
The completed media wall brings storage, technology and display space together in one coherent composition.
Closed cabinetry keeps everyday items and AV equipment out of sight, while the oak shelving provides space for books and carefully selected decorative pieces. The combination of painted joinery, natural timber and subtle lighting gives the room a warm, understated character.
Most importantly, the installation feels integrated with the architecture of the Hampstead property rather than added as a separate piece of furniture.
The result is a practical and welcoming family living room that retains its period elegance while supporting modern daily life.
